Carr was selected as an astronaut in May 1966. He served a variety of functions including support crew for Apollo 8 and 12 and was involved in the development and testing of the Lunar Roving Vehicle.

He was the commander of the Skylab 4 mission and a participant in the "Skylab Mutiny" He was the first rookie astronaut to command a mission since Neil Armstrong on Gemini 8.
