Bridges, Jr. was the former director of NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center and Langley Research Center as well as a NASA astronaut.He flew on the STS-51: Challenger mission as the pilot. He was slotted as pilot for the STS-61 mission which was cancelled after the disaster. He would later serve from 2003-2005 as the director of the Langley Research Center. He was Director at John F. Kennedy's Space Center for over six years.
