Thomas joined NASA in 1991 after twice having his application turned down. He reapplied himself, got his pilot license and began teaching in order to boost his resume. Briefly he served as director of Operations for NASA at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center before he began flying shuttles. A vetereran of four space flights, he logged over 1,040 hours in space. He was a mission specialist on STS-65, STS-70,  STS-83, and STS-94.
