Heib served as mission specialist on the STS-49, the maiden voyage of the Space Shuttle Endeavour. He also served as mission specialist on STS-39: Discovery and as payload commander for STS-65: Columbia.

He partook in the only three person spacewalk which became the second longest spacewalk in history. Heib spent a total of about 32 days in space.
