Meade became an astronaut in July 1986. He served on the STS-38: Atlantis as Mission Specialist, STS-50: Columbiaa as Mission Specialist, and STS-68: Discovery as Mission Specialist, where Meade performed an untethered spacewalk while testing a self-rescue jetpack.

In all he logged more than 29 days in space. After NASA, Meade became the Deputy Project Manager for the Lockheed's X-33 vehicle. This image is inscribed "To Andew, best wishes, Carl Meade"
