The Badminton Tradition is about four subjects deeply embedded in the British way of Life: the peerage, stately homes, hunting and three-day eventing.
In 700 years only two families have lived at Badminton house, which, in addition to being a stately home in the accepted sense of the word, is also very much a home for the Sumerset family. The Beaufort Hunt and hounds are perhaps the most famous in the world and the Duke has carried on the tradition of hunting and hound-breeding that began with the 5th Duke in 1762. In 1949 , the present Duke instituted the Badminton Horse Trials, an innovation which has played a major part in the development of three-day eventing throughout the world.
