"Although it must not be for one moment supposed that I vouch for the absolute correctness of some of the reports that I shall now insert..." Thus begins the unknown writer of Tales of Old Petworth, understandably so when one considers what is to follow.

Incidents as bizarre as an encounter with a witch in guize of a hare are entweined with anecdotes of smugglers, coachmen, and humbler, but no less colourful characters from petworth in the first half of the 19th century.

Written over 100 years ago, the tales are a mystery themselves, the only copy of the manuscript being found in a Petworth inn. Their owner was never traced and they are now reprinted unabridged.
