Eastbourne College was founded in the mid-nineteenth century by professional men of the town seeking to add to the town's glory by the provision of a fee-paying school for the sons of the professional and gentry classes. They probably did not expect the school to last over a 100 year and to go through the changes which are documented in the book. Allom writes as a former member of school staff with good access to a wide range of public and private sources and with great affection for the school.
