A reprint of an essay published in 1701. An anonymous Virginian's Proposals for Liberty under the British Crown, with two memoranda by William Byrd. A Virginian writer urged greater understanding by the English government in the administration of the colonies and refuted misinformation, about Virginia and Maryland in particular, circulated by English Authors. This essay proposed a plan of union for the colonies that anticipated Benjamin Franklin's famous scheme by fifty three years and included provisions for governing America that might have kept it within the framework of the British Empire.
