Full contemporary marbled calfskin leather, spine adorned with gilt fleurons, title and volume number label, gilt along edge of boards (somewhat worn away) marbled endpapers and edges. Contains a few parchment bookmarks that look like they were part of a handwritten note torn up. Ribbon bookmark included attached to spine. One corner rubbed.  Some shelf wear. Very little foxing and pages clean. First edition under this title. The Principles of Literature actually form an assemblage of several earlier writings by Abbé Batteux. Before adopting this encompassing title in 1764, he had separately produced a treatise entitled Les Beaux-Arts reduced to a single principle in 1746, a Cours de Belles-Lettres, distributed by exercises in 1747 and 1748, and a treatise on the Oratory built in 1763.
