Musgrave is the most educated astronaut to have flown thus far, holding six degrees. He is the only astronaut to have flown on all five space shuttles. He was selected by NASA in 1967. He worked on the development of Skylab and the development of all space shuttle extra-vehicular equipment such as the space suits, life support systems, and airlocks.

He served as mission specialist on STS-6 (1983), STS-51-F/Spacelab-2 (1985), STS-33 (1989), STS-44 (1991), and STS-80 (1996); and the payload commander on STS-61 and clocked about 53 days in space.
