Pontes was the first South American and first Lusophone to go to space. He is an Air Force pilot, engineer, astronaut, politician and author.

Pontes was selected by the Brazillian Space Agency to train with NASA in 1998. He participated in Soyuz TMA-8,
Missão Centenário, and Soyuz TMA-7 and logged a total of 9 days in space.
