The project of writing a book on the Mexican Revolution was conceived in the autumn of 1922. More than a decade had passed since the fall of Porfirio Díaz, a decade of destruction, confusion, and then slow re-orientation out of chaos. For two years the Harding administration had withheld recognition from the Obregón administration for reasons little understood by the majority of Americans. Following eleven years of incessant difficulties, such a policy portended further tension between the two countries. Many reports about Mexico received in the United States clearly emanated from biased sources, from groups or persons with a purpose to serve. This book represents a long effort to present the events of Mexico and the revolution in a non-biased light.
