Lavater was a Swiss theologian, poet, and philosopher who is best known for his work in physiognomy, the study of facial features and their relation to character. In this book, however, Lavater turns his attention inward and shares his personal experiences, struggles, and reflections.

Translated from the original German by Reverend Peter Will.

Previous owner signature of Anna Maria Lanes or Anna Maria Lane. The former lived in England and the latter was the first woman to serve in the American Revolutionary War. Further research is needed to confirm identity, though we suspect the former is correct.
