There is a surprising inclusion from Tennessee Williams, better known as a playwright and novelist than as a writer of macabre tales. "The Vengeance of Nitocris" was written while Tennessee Williams was still a schoolboy of sixteen. It is his first professional effort, and although it bears witness to his youth, this sanguinary story is historically founded. Williams says about it: 'it is a prelude to the violence that is considered my trademark'.

In all, twenty stories have been selected, each one exploring some aspect of the supernatural, and the mysteries of time and infinity.
