~1772 - Handwritten American Ledger, Revolutionary Period
Hardcover. 1772-1811.
Period sheep, clasp lacking. Approximately 106 pp. with entries, and a section of blanks at end. A late 18th century American ledger, kept during the American Revolutionary period, recording monies received by various tradesmen and individuals in and around New York and Connecticut. Nearly all of the entries dated in the last quarter of the 1700s, with 4 pages containing entries from the early 1800s. Receipts are made out to "Jonathan Humphrey and Son." This is most likely Colonel Jonathan Humphrey Sr. (1715–1794) and his son Jonathan Humphrey Jr. (1743–1812.) The Humphreys were an important family of merchants and leaders in the CT and NY area. Colonel Humphrey was an officer in the 18th Regiment of the Connecticut Militia during the American Revolution. The present ledger ends one year prior to Jonathan Humphrey Junior's death.
