Well known American poet Edwin Markham was poet Loreate of Oregan from 1923-1931. The author has written a lengthy inscription to Alfred W McCann (Written Alfred M McCann by mistake, but clearly adressed to W. McCann as can be noted by the reference to including his instructing the nation on how to eat) McCann hosted the "Pure Food Hour" on the WOR radio station in the 1920s to expose practices of the American food industry, though his theories and advice were largely dismissed as quackery. Apparently Markham took him quite seriously.
